Description:

Presented
by the FHSU Center for Economic Education:
This two-day workshop will provide teachers with an
overview of economic thinking; a model lesson plan; a guide that states the
solution to each mystery; and many delightful and often humorous mysteries.
This Teachers Resource Manual is a book about economic reasoning as it might
be taught and practiced in upper-elementary and middle school and high
school classrooms. It explains and illustrates a particular approach to
reasoning and shows how students can use this approach to think about
problems and to imagine solutions for them. It presents an array of
problems, or mysteries, to be used by students in practicing reasoning
skills, and it invites teachers and students to supply new mysteries. Some
of the mysteries presented will be familiar to students, reflecting aspects
of their experiences and others will challenge them to stretch their
imaginations and think about new concepts. To help in these efforts,
background information has been built into the problems in the form of clues
and true/false questions. Through the mysteries, the emphasis is on
reasoning as opposed to research and students are encouraged to bring their
past experiences into use solving the various mysteries.

Description:

Presented
by the FHSU Center for Economic Education:
This two day workshop is designed around a zoo theme. The
teachers will work with the curriculum for their grade level.
In the lower elementary the students learn about animal
classification by sorting stuffed animals. The students work with partners
to learn more about various animals and to create zoo structures. Then they
invite visitors to the zoo to see the animals, eat popcorn and ride the
train. The curriculum addresses decision-making, opportunity cost,
resources, and human capital development.
In the middle elementary classrooms, students design their
own zoo, carefully researching the habitat, diet and special characteristics
of their favorite animals. When they discover they want more animals than
they can have, some tough decisions must be made. Fortunately, this program
teaches the decision-making skills that will allow your students to become
good zooconomists.
Acting as travel agents, middle-school students plan the
trip of a lifetime deep into the rainforest. To make this a profitable
venture, the young agents must carefully analyze each aspect of the trip,
including the transportation, food, and lodging. Agents who find the most
profitable combination of features win.

use the "Teaching the Ethical Foundations of Economics" curriculum which
uses innovative instructional materials to help students learn about the
important role ethics and character play in a market economy and how, in
turn, markets influence ethical behavior.
The lessons do more than illustrate how ethical conduct
improves an economy. They actively involve the students through simulations,
group decision making, problem solving, classroom demonstrations and role
playing. The lessons encourage students to think critically about ethical
dilemmas. Your students will leave your classroom with an appreciation of
the moral code that every citizen contributes to the economy as an employee,
business owner, and customer.

Economics in U.S.
History uses a unique mystery-solving
approach to teach U.S. economic history to your high school students. These
activity-based lessons give you a new, refreshing way to meet your U.S.
History content goals, and infuse eye-opening economics material at the same
time.
Your
students solve intriguing historical mysteries such as:
• Why did the 13 American colonies prosper, when they had
little to offer economically?
• Is education beyond high school worth the cost?
• Why did the economy grow during the 1920's, but falter
during the 1930's?
• Did the New Deal help, or hurt, economic recovery?
• Why did the post-World War II years bring unprecedented
prosperity and expansion to the American middle class?
Each lesson plan is arranged chronologically and covers key
economic and historical events, so you can easily integrate the lesson plans
into your curriculum as you zip through your U.S. History textbook. It's the
best way to engage all your students in U.S. economic history, regardless of
their interest or learning levels.
These supplemental activity-based lessons give your students
an applied understanding of U.S. economic history, in a way standard
textbook readings just can't.
To give you
a stress-free teaching experience, each lesson plan was:
• developed by an expert in economic education;
• tested in the classroom with students;
• reviewed by a prominent economic historian;
• and correlated with Kansas Social Studies Standards
You don't need a background in economics to teach these
lessons!
The Kansas Council on Economic Education will pay $100
toward tuition for Kansas teachers. Free materials and door prizes!
