A Brief Summary:
The Stock Market Game™
is a classroom-based teaching tool designed to promote a better understanding
of our economic system while stressing math, social studies and reading as they
relate to the SMG. The SMG is a fun and motivating way to teach serious skills and
concepts that students will use for the rest of their lives.
In conjunction with a carefully designed curriculum, teams of students compete by investing a hypothetical $100,000 in stocks over a ten-week period in fall or spring sessions. Student transactions
are entered via the internet at
http://www.stockmarketgame.org.
Teams view their
portfolios
at any time on-line, which include current holdings, brokerage fees, margin
interest and team rankings. The competition is divided into elementary (4-5), middle
school (6-8) and
high school (9-12) throughout Kansas. There is also a college/adult/teacher region for anyone who
wishes to participate outside of the 4-12 classroom.
SMG has been in widely used by teachers in Kansas since 1977 and is owned and operated by
The Foundation for
Investor Education, previously known as the Securities Industry
Foundation for Economic Education. In 1977 Kansas became one of the first states involved in
the SMG and was responsible for processing portfolios. The KSU Center for
Economic Education coordinated all SMG activities until the SMG coordinating was
moved to the KCEE main office in 2001. If you would like more information on how
to get involved in this program, please contact Angela at
KCEE@wichita.edu or call
316-978-5335.
The importance of the SMG cannot be overstated. It is highly motivational and
adaptable to all ability levels. Teachers are encouraged to use an
interdisciplinary teaching approach. Along with placing emphasis on learner
outcomes, the Stock Market Game™ becomes a timely and invaluable teaching tool
and can be used to help meet many educational standards. Advisors have
access to Kansas and National standards correlations in
Math,
Economic,
Business, Social
Studies, Family & Consumer Science, English/Language Arts &
Technology standards.

Impact Study Results:
In August 2009, Learning Point
Associates, a leading educational research firm, completed a two-year study
funded by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) to test the
efficacy of the SMG program. The findings showed that SMG substantially improves
student math scores on standardized tests and improves student investor
knowledge. The study also showed that teachers were more likely to engage in
financial planning practices as a result of teaching SMG.

Additionally, the first “Nation’s
Report Card on Economics”, released in 2007, found that students participating
in a stock market game scored a statistically significant higher score on
standardized tests than students who had not participated. Lastly, in six
consecutive reports over a 12 year period, the biannual survey by the Jump$tart
Coalition for Financial Literacy also found that students that participated in a
stock market game score higher on the Jump$tart financial literacy survey than
students that did not participate.
